What is Paint Correction?
Paint correction is a detailing process that removes surface imperfections such as swirl marks, minor scratches, and oxidation to restore vehicles to near-original condition. It's performed using machine polishers with various compounds and pads to carefully remove thin layers of clear coat, levelling out the surface and eliminating defects.
The result is paint that looks deeper, glossier, and free from the swirl marks and scratches that dull a car's appearance. But there are different levels of correction depending on your paint's condition and your goals.
One-Step Paint Correction
Objective
One-step correction aims to enhance gloss and remove minor scratches and swirls in a single polishing stage. It's designed for paint that's in relatively good condition but has light marring and swirl marks that detract from its appearance.
The Process
A single polishing stage is performed using a medium-grade polish that combines cutting and finishing properties. The polish removes light defects while simultaneously refining the finish to a high gloss.
Duration and Cost
One-step correction is quicker and less expensive, typically taking 4-6 hours depending on vehicle size. This makes it accessible for more car owners who want improved paint appearance without the full investment of a multi-stage correction.
Results
Removes light swirl marks and minor scratches effectively. However, it may not fully address deeper damage or more severe oxidation. Expect around 50-70% defect removal on average.
Best For: Vehicles with light swirling, minor wash marks, and paint that's generally in good condition. Also ideal as maintenance between more intensive corrections.
Two-Step Paint Correction
Objective
Two-step correction is designed to address substantial paint defects and heavier marring. It's the choice for paint that needs significant restoration, whether from years of neglect, poor washing techniques, or environmental damage.
The Process
As the name suggests, this involves two distinct stages:
- Stage 1 - Cutting: An aggressive cutting compound is used with a firmer pad to remove deeper scratches, heavy swirl marks, and oxidation. This stage does the heavy lifting.
- Stage 2 - Polishing/Refining: A fine polish is used with a softer pad to remove any marks left by the cutting stage and bring the paint to a high-gloss, flawless finish.
Duration and Cost
Two-step correction is more time-consuming and costly, typically taking 8-16 hours depending on the vehicle's size and paint condition. The additional time and expertise required is reflected in the price.
Results
Delivers a higher-level correction for a flawless finish. Expect 80-95%+ defect removal, with the paint looking significantly better than after a one-step correction. This is the level needed for show cars or vehicles being prepared for sale.
Best For: Vehicles with significant paint damage, heavy swirling, deeper scratches, or oxidation. Also recommended before applying ceramic coatings for maximum visual impact.
Which Should You Choose?
The right choice depends on several factors:
- Current paint condition: Light swirls only? One-step. Heavy marring and scratches? Two-step.
- Your budget: One-step is more affordable and still provides noticeable improvement.
- Your goals: Looking for a quick enhancement? One-step. Want perfection? Two-step.
- Future plans: Applying ceramic coating? Two-step ensures you're sealing in the best possible finish.
A professional detailer can assess your paint condition and recommend the appropriate level of correction. Sometimes a one-step is all that's needed; other times, only a two-step will achieve the desired results.
